General Description
This position is responsible to develop ETL (Extraction Transformation and Loading) programs for the data warehouse projects in support of an organization’s information technology requirements. Reviews, evaluates, designs, implements and maintains ETL Programs. Identifies data sources, constructs data decomposition diagrams and documents the process. Develops ETL programs to load the data marts for reporting purposes and create extract files in a structured format.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Analysis and Design Responsibilities
Assist in preparing logical and physical data models using standard data modeling software
Assist in identifying entities, attributes and relationships, as well as in defining them in a complete and accurate form within scope
Participate with other team members in designing the semantic layer (OLAP Cube/Universe)
Prepare technical documents to identify work flows and data flows
Document the source and destination mapping appropriately
Development and Implementation Responsibilities
Develop ETL (Extraction, Transformation & Load) programs to load the data marts as per the business requirements.
Create database objects, normalize tables as needed. Maintain the database referential integrity.
Create indexes, keys, joins appropriately to ensure best performance.
Follow industry/company naming conventions for database objects, file names.
Understand the source system thoroughly and identify the necessary objects for extraction.
Implement the business logic by developing proper data transformations inside the work & data flows.
Create accurate mapping from source to destination and ensure the data is accurately transferred.
Develop reusable logical data & work flows.
Follow & enforce standards when creating extract files. Use control totals and checksums as necessary.
Segregate the development, staging, test and production environments.
Ensure that ETL programs are updated in the central repository for sharing and version control.
Use version control techniques and procedures as per company standards.
Follow SDLC (System Development Life Cycle).
Testing & Quality Assurance Responsibilities
Perform unit, system, integration and regression tests. Document test results and make recommendations.
Validate the data thoroughly for its accuracy against the source system or other standard system reports.
Actively engage the database developers and analysts to validate the data before UAT.
Administration and Maintenance Responsibilities
Pro-actively carry out project support /administrative functions.
Monitor the production jobs and make sure they are completed on-time.
Perform audits regularly in accordance with company policies.
Document the audits and its results and report to the management & appropriate personnel.
Correct the audit findings in a timely manner and complete necessary documentations.
Test the backup and recovery plan periodically to ensure it is complete.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.
Certifications
Any relevant certifications are a plus.
Experience
5+ years of experience in Information Technology field with experience in Develop, Test and Implementation of Decision Support Systems and Data warehouses.
3+ years solid hands-on database development & SQL programming experience (stored procedures, triggers) using MS SQL Server, Oracle and/or other data bases.
2+ Experience in ETL Development (Extract Transformation & Load) using ETL Tools like MS SQL Server DTS/SSIS, Informatica, Data Stage, Business Objects Data Integrator etc.
Thorough knowledge and experience in Relational & Dimensional Data Models, OLAP, Star & Snow-flake schema and experience in developing data models using Erwin , MS-VISIO.
Other Qualifications
Proven capability to craft solutions using data warehouse architecture, design principles, practices, systems development & analysis
Ability to encrypt data using PGP and automated data transfer using FTP, SFTP; scripting is a plus
Ability to perform database administration tasks (backup, restore, tuning, performance analysis etc.)
Ability to craft Decision Support/Analytical solutions using one or more tools like Crystal Reports, Business Objects, Cognos, Brio, Essbase etc.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
