Prosecute violators of a variety of law enforcement acts, laws, rules, and regulations that have been enacted to insure the protection and safe use of national wildlife refuge resources Investigate the occurrence of criminal activity, arson, illegal hunting and fishing, disturbance of fish and wildlife, firearms violations, timber theft, hazardous material violations or dumping, vandalism Investigate the occurrence of theft or disturbance of archeological resources, illegal harvesting of plants and animals, traffic violations, marijuana cultivation, use or sale of illegal drugs, crimes against persons or property and trespassing Investigate violation of applicable Federal and State fish and wildlife laws including poaching, illegal hunting of waterfowl, illegal use of aircraft for hunting migratory waterfowl and commercial fishing Enforce applicable laws and regulations concerning the possession, use, distribution, trafficking, cultivation, and manufacture of controlled substances on Service managed lands Prepare investigations or case reports by documenting findings and facts, obtaining witness statements and copies of official records, and including pertinent evidence, correspondence, maps, historical information, exhibits, and photographs Travel Required Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position. LMWFA or Public Land Corps eligibles may apply Qualifications This position is a commissioned Federal law enforcement officer. The primary purpose of the position is to perform law enforcement duties that are integral to protection of natural, cultural and human resources through the investigation, apprehension and detention of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the United States. This position is part of the Division of Refuge Law Enforcement. As a Land Management Law Enforcement Officer you will serve as commissioned law enforcement officer performing law enforcement duties. You may qualify at the GS-05 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements: 4 academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree or bachelor's degree; OR At least 3 years of progressively responsible general experience, 1 year of which was equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in Federal service, that demonstrates ability in assisting in conducting research for developing and presenting briefings, lectures, multi-media shows, structured talks, impromptu talks, guided tours, and other presentations on refuge or park resources; and knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, and policies relating to the protection and use of refuge or park resources OR A combination of education and experience as listed above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GL-5. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GL-5. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. (1) In order to be eligible for PLC non-competitive status, a former member of the PLC must provide documentation, as part of their application, verifying their eligibility and meet the following criteria: (a) Served as a qualified youth on an appropriate conservation project completing a minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service that included at least 120 hours through the PLC; (b) Applied to a vacancy announcement for which applications are being accepted from individuals with non-competitive status; (c) Meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) minimum qualification standards stated in the vacancy announcement for the position which you are applying; and (d) Completed his/her most recent Corps service, which provided him/her with a total of 640 hours, inclusive of 120 hours on a PLC project as defined in 16 USC 1723(d), within the last two (2) years.
