The Surgical Service Chief conveys the Hospital's and Service's mission to all staff, supports staff and encourages in them a sense of ownership of their work processes, holds staff accountable for their performance, and continuously motivates the staff to improve their performance. The Service Chief regularly receives, reviews, and evaluates relevant data and information on the performance of each Service member who has delineated clinical privileges. Such information consists of relevant results of performance improvement activities, evaluation of sentinel events, and each practitioner's involvement in the professional duties, responsibilities, and activities of the Medical Center staff and direct patient care activities. Overall responsibilities of the Surgical Service Chief typically include, but are not limited to: All clinically related activities of the Service. All administratively related activities of the Service. Continuing surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the Service who have delineated clinical privileges. Recommending to the medical staff the criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided in the Service. Recommending clinical privileges for each member of the Service. Assessing and recommending to the relevant hospital authority offsite sources for needed patient care services not provided by the Service or the Organization. Integrating the Service into the primary functions of the organization. Coordinating and integrating interdepartmental and intradepartmental services. Developing and implementing policies and procedures that guide and support lhe provision of services. Recommending a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide care or service. Determining the qualifications and competence of Service personnel who are not licensed independent practitioners and who provide patient care services. Continuously assessing and improving the quality of care of the services provided. Maintaining appropriate quality control programs. Providing orientation, in-service training and continuing education to all employees in the Service. Making recommendations for space and other resources needed by the Section. Work Schedule: Tour of duty requires clinical operational oversight through the weekends and off-tour hours Incentives: Recruitment or Relocation Incentive may be approved for a highly qualified candidate. PCS AUTHORIZED. Basic Requirements : United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: All physicians must meet the following qualifications: 1 . Patient Care: Practitioners are expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life. 2. Medical/Clinical Knowledge: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others. 3. Clinical Judgment: To ensure practice-based learning and improvement, practitioners are expected to be able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care. 4. Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. 5. Professionalism: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients, their profession. 6. Systems-Based Practice: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve optimizing health care. Assignment: A Service Chief or Line Manager physician must demonstrate the following: (a) Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty; (b) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These programs would include, but are not limited to medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Work is mostly sedentary; however, slight physical effort may be required to carry books, computer products, files, etc. Work may require standing and walking in conjunction with travel to attend meetings and conferences away from the worksite. Travel may be required.
