In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for initial appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution. The representative rate for this position is $57,345 per annum ($27.48 per hour). Learn more about this agency Responsibilities The incumbent supervises the operation of the recreation and leisure time program for the inmate population. The incumbent will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing special recreation programs, i.e., yoga, varsity softball, aerobics, etc. Incumbent will assist the Recreation Supervisor and the other recreation/sports specialists in planning, organizing, advising on and administering recreation activities and programs which promote the physical, creative and social development for the inmate population. Incumbent will assist in supervision of athletic activities and institutional teams participating in community-based activities. The incumbent will devise and improvise recreation activities to meet the needs of special individuals or groups in the inmate population of the institution. Incumbent will plan and develop classes for wellness and leisure time programs. The incumbent provides guidance, leisure, and wellness counseling to inmates. The incumbent instructs individual inmates and inmate groups in various recreation activities. The incumbent promotes maximum involvement of inmates in recreation activities and services through resident committees and other peer groups. Incumbent will assume the responsibility of Recreation Supervisor and other recreational staff positions when necessary. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis. Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study-general recreation or one of the appropriate fields of recreation, such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. NOTE: If you are using education to qualify, you MUST provide transcripts to receive consideration. Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) applicants MUST provide a transcript in order to be considered under S.A.A. The education MUST be from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Experience at this level demonstrates the ability to apply principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in developing team sports and activities or tournaments. Experience that demonstrates skill in a wide range of participant interest, experience in developing and overseeing a recreation program's daily operation and primarily organize and direct participants. Experience in developing and implementing activities and arrange for community resources, experience in developing indoor and outdoor activities to meet the needs of an inmate population. GL-09: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GL-07 grade level. Experience at this level have the ability to adapt and develop program activities to meet the divergent needs of an inmate population and the ability to conduct classes and training to coaches, participants, and/or officials for various sports. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs. Experience in planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. Experience in instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. Experience in serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations. Experience in organizing athletic leagues, tournaments, and other recreational activities, as well as all types of passive, social, and cultural leisure activities. OR Combination of Education and Experience: GL-07 and GL-09: You may have a combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications necessary to successfully perform the major duties of this position as described above. Credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.
