Learn more about this agency Responsibilities As a Data Section Field Operations Chief within the Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Primary authority and control over the operation of all basic data networks in the Guaynabo, PR - CFWSC - this encompasses the supervision of all routine field work and field data collection activities, responsibility for the establishment and maintenance of all network-related structures and equipment and for all scientific integrity and quality assurance of all hydrologic data and data analyses for basic networks; direction and review of all hydrologic computations and interpretations, preparation of network data and analyses for publication. Meets with technical or resource-management personnel from other Federal, state, county or city government offices and has frequent contact with consulting firms, university personnel and the public. Computes and analyzes stream-flow records. Develops complex stage discharge or velocity index curves, instructs others in methods of hydrologic record computation, checking and review and installs, maintains and services complex hydrologic sensing and recording instrumentation and associated communication equipment. Provides guidance, direction and leadership to co-workers and subordinates. Handles heavy workload and multiple priorities. Operates government owned vehicle as an incidental driver. Work assignments normally involve 50 percent office and 50 percent field effort. Office assignments are generally sedentary. Occasional physical activities required in field assignments, include walking, bending, stooping, and carry stream gaging and chemical and biological sampling equipment. Field work may occasionally require lifting fairly heavy objects and wading in streams in all types of weather. Office assignments normally involve everyday risks or discomforts that are typical of office meeting and training rooms, libraries and residences or commercial vehicles. Work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Field work may expose hydrologic technician to potentially dangerous situations and exposure to moderate discomfort from such extremes as heat, cold, and inclement weather, particularly on flood trips during severe storms. Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation. Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period. For GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: planning and conducting the computation and collection of data from approximately thirty or more gaging stations; determining stage-discharge relations, computing rating tables and mean daily, monthly and annual discharge rates from these stations. Acting as a party chief and making indirect measurements of flood flows under extremely difficult conditions. Collecting data including that required to compute flood flows by the slope-area method, by measurement of flow over dams, by flow through culverts and by flow over embankments. Obtaining hydrologic data from published and unpublished sources and conducting hydrologic studies relative to the frequency of flood and droughts. Planning and coordinating a ground water survey program for an area that may be either a small area with complex features or a larger area with planning and coordinating problems related to the scope of the ground water survey operations. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement. Education Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
