Place of Performance: VA Caribbean Healthcare System at 10 Casia Street, San Juan, Puerto Rico 00921 Job Summary: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is seeking a highly skilled and qualified Board Certified/Board Eligible Cardiothoracic Physician Surgeon to provide on-site Open-Heart Cardiothoracic Surgery services at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The selected candidate will be responsible for delivering comprehensive clinical care, including initial patient evaluation, surgical procedures, postoperative care, and participation in clinical and administrative activities as outlined in the job description. Scope of Care: The contractor physician(s) shall provide a wide range of Cardiothoracic Surgery services, including but not limited to VATs, Lobectomy's, thoracotomy, diaphragm plication, chest wall hernia repair, decortication, pleurectomy, chest tube management w/tPA, and other complex Cardiothoracic surgery procedures. Clinic Responsibilities: The contractor's physician(s) are expected to adhere to scheduled clinic start times and provide timely and efficient clinical care. Communication of Test Results: Ensure mechanisms are in place for the prompt communication of test results to patients and providers in accordance with VHA Directive 1088. Medications: Follow all established medication policies and procedures, refraining from providing sample medications to patients. Discharge Education: Provide comprehensive discharge education and follow-up instructions coordinated with the next care setting for all emergency department patients. Administrative Responsibilities: Allocate an estimated 10% of time to participate in clinical discussions, Cardiac Board meetings, Surgical Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) meetings, Professional Practice Review of Providers System (PROPS) Program, and compliance with mandatory trainings. Requirements: Valid License Board Certification in Cardiothoracic Surgery Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification Continuing Medical Education (CME)/ Certified Education Unit (CEU) compliance Standard Personnel Testing National Provider Identifier (NPI) registration DEA certificate Compliance with legal provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 Annual Office of Inspector General (OIG) Statement submission Fluent in English (spoken, written, read) This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the healthcare needs of veterans in a dynamic and diverse setting.
