Duties SummaryThe Chief of Staff (COS) serves as an integral, active member of the Executive Leadership Team continuously assessing and improving the overall delivery of patient care. The COS oversees and coordinates daily clinical operations in inpatient, outpatient, and residential areas and works closely with other members of the Executive Leadership Team and staff of clinical and administrative services.ResponsibilitiesLead clinical staff in providing individualized, quality health care to each Veteran, fully embracing VHA's core values of Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence.Maintain appropriate staffing levels in all assigned clinical areas, coordinating staff development, fostering an active educational environment and assuring optimal, quality patient care.Promote the development of health care professionals through teaching, mentoring, counseling, and promoting consistent self-assessment activities of subordinates for their optimal personal and professional growth and advancement.Promote and monitor compliance with VA regulations and professional standards, working to ensure that all facility clinical programs reflect the mission and priorities of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and VISN 8.Provide advice and counsel in defining and accomplishing the facility's mission and goals.Develop and maintain mutually-beneficial working relationships with affiliated medical schools and other clinical program affiliates with students/residents training in our Medical Center, recruits highly-qualified, licensed professional staff, and ensures that all practitioners are appropriately credentialed and privileged, in accordance with VHA and local medical staff bylaws.Ensure all medical and other provider staff are fully compliant with agency rules/regulations, local VA facility policies, and Joint Commission, CARF, and other external accrediting body standards/regulations.Serve as a role model in promoting an environment of continuous performance improvement, within which programs and quality of care effectiveness are continuously evaluated.Candidate must meet the needs of customers while supporting the VA mission; consistently communicate and treat customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors and all VA Staff) in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner, provide customers with consistent information related to established policies and procedures; and handle conflict and problems in dealing with customers constructively and appropriately.
