The Program will have a positive effect in reducing poverty and supporting the well-being of the communities as healthy places to visit, live, and invest. This modality is unique because most of the benefits are kept within the local economy. Members of the community, including those not directly involved with tourism, gain benefits given by the multiplier effect. Community-based tourism is a model that should be promoted due to its social, economic, and environmental benefits. Thus, under the Sustainable Community Based Tourism Program the Puerto Rico Tourism Company promotes the conservation of natural and cultural heritage; and the community plays the main role in a harmonious manner with its surroundings, leading to a sense of authenticity and pride of place. The Tourism Company is committed to being the link to promote the interaction between tourists and host communities through the promotional efforts.
