Research & Development Specialist – Salinas, PR
What You Will Do:
As a Research & Development Specialist, you will be responsible for field Crop Trials end to end processes including seed receiving, preparation for planting, crop maintenance, irrigation, pollination, harvest, drying, seed processing, post-harvest control, land strategy
You will manage laboratory processes (sampling), seed inventory/storage procedures, regulatory compliance and screen house plantings if required
Budget management of available resources and ensure purchasing of supplies for the program
Interact with other areas in the company for a proper usage of available resources
Ensure that projects have updated protocols, ways of work and are aligned with the customer
Establish and Implement the projects KPI´s to ensure the successful delivery of all KPI´s related crops such as quantity, quality, data and timelines
Ensure appropriate staffing and training levels for future growth
Knowledge & use of various data platforms
Ensure compliance and play an active role in all Syngenta foundations (HSE, Quality, Stewardship, Regulatory, and so forth)
Ensure HSE&S procedures are followed at all times in areas of responsibility, and be an active member of the site HSE&S committee
Lead TRA, MOC, JSA, work permits and accident investigations as needed
Ensure operating culture, skills and continuity
Innovate and implement new technologies
Identify capital expansions, replacements and needs on a yearly basis
Manage crops end to end procedures
Pest control and quality conditions
Coordinate work with site support areas (Admin, Agronomy, Hand labor, etc.)
Lead the site communication with stakeholders for both projects (soybean and sunflower)
Lead the Operational Excellence projects and build a continuous improvement culture
Qualifications
You Have:
Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Crop Science, Biology, or related field
Minimum 5 years of experience in Soybean and Sunflower Continuous Nurseries activities
Solid understanding of all relevant agronomic/cultural practices in a tropical environment (irrigation, planting, IPM, pesticide applications)
Knowledge of seed crop research, production and quality assurance practices
Knowledge and experience in the Soybean and Sunflower seed production
Experience on Screen house or closed environments
Knowledge of and ability to use computer software for data management, e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, GIS mapping software and other relevant software required to operate efficiently
Proficient in Spanish and English, both written and verbal
Experience in Fields management, Budget management, and People management
Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple groups at 2 locations (Salinas and Juana Diaz) simultaneously at peak work periods
Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in the field or greenhouse
Capability to lift up to 50 pounds
Capability to work under environmental conditions of extreme high temperatures and moisture
Capability to be exposed to potential allergens such as pollen, fungal spores, agricultural dust, and chemical pesticides in the field and/or greenhouse
Capability of working long hours during time-critical periods of the growing season
Ability to occasionally travel to continental U.S.A. for training and conference purposes
