MPA- Medical Physics Assistant, (Also known as a Medical Physicist Associate as accepted in some States) as designated by the AAPM Standards Policy PP 29-A. This title may also include Medical Physicists, who are in training and have completed a CAMPEP Accredited Program in Medical Physics, but who have not completed Board Certification in a specific field of Medical Physics to become a QMP. The Medical Physicist Assistant (MPA), working under the general supervision of a Qualified Medical Physicist (QMP), must have equivalent qualifications, competence and function, in the same role as employed individuals performing the same or similar services at the facility, as defined by a facility job description. uses their knowledge of imaging science and medicine, with appropriate analytical techniques, to collect information and create reports for review and signature by the Qualified Medical Physicist to document the quality and safety of diagnostic imaging equipment in one or more of the following Medical Physics Specialties; o Diagnostic Medical Physics o Nuclear Medical Physics o Medical Health Physics may also provide guidance about safe use and regulatory requirements for MRI safety, radiation safety, occupational dosimetry, and radioactive materials. may consult with a wide range of medical, technical, and administrative staff. use a variety of specialized instrumentation and an understanding of clinical operations, to conduct periodic quality assurance (QA) surveys on diagnostic imaging equipment and some radiation therapy equipment (no patients). Typical Responsibilities Of The Job Include: Conducting quality assurance surveys for the imaging equipment listed above, including: testing of image quality and machine performance, quality control and calibration, and safety surveys as directed by the Qualified Medical Physicist. Training hospital staff on performance of routine QC techniques, Radiation Safety, HazMat Shipping and Handling, or MRI safety, as directed by the Qualified Medical Physicist. Conducting Radiation Protection Surveys as directed by Qualified Medical Physicist (QMP). Supporting the Radiation Safety Committee as a Radiation Safety Officer or as an invited advisor for consultation on Radiation Safety and imaging safety as requested. Providing guidance, within their scope of practice, at radiation safety committee meetings or to hospital staff or physicians regarding radiation exposure and safety as directed by Qualified Medical Physicist.
